Is campus safe?

When will be the earliest people can move into the dorms?

August 25th for first year students 

Where do the ROTC students stay?

First year cadets typically resided in Spencer Residence Hall and upperclassmen live in Kable Residence Hall and other upperclassman halls

When do classes start?

Classes will begin on August 31

Have fall sports been discussed?

The president made the announcement late last week that we are intending to open in the fall. Fall athletics will happen. Regulations will be set by the NCAA and our conference USA South

Do PEG students have to choose a meal plan, or is there only one?

First year PEG students choice the same meal plans as our first year freshman. There is a fixed 21 option and an unlimited plan option

Will there be any On-Campus tours in July?

The decision has not been made on if summer tours will resume.(Will there be any On-Campus tours in July?)

What types of activities are planned for freshmen in the first few weeks? 

During new student orientation (the days after you move in leading up to classes beginning) there are TONS of activities planned. As the semester starts, our clubs and organizations will take over with events.

Will there be a mandatory orientation before we can attend? Is orientation going to be online?

Our summer “New Student Days” will be virtual and our hope is that new student orientation in August will be on campus.

Is it possible for us to see the dorms before we move in?

Our hope is to provide some pictures/videos to students via email as the summer progresses.

Freshmen are allowed to have a car on campus!

Any off-campus activities?

Yes! Being situated in the Shenandoah Valley, there are tons of opportunities to get off campus. There are local hiking trails, snowtubing/snowboarding, canoeing (if you like to get outside). We also have several students who venture downtown to explore.

Day to Day in college is a bit different than day to day in high school. Students may have classes in the morning/afternoon or throughout the day. If you have breaks in your schedule, you can go study, go to the dining hall, hang out in your residence hall, take a nap, etc. In the evenings, there may be events for students to attend (in the residence hall and in different locations)

Will we be able to contact our roommate before classes start?

After the Virtual New Student Day, you will receive information about your roommate 

Is there a curfew to be on campus?

There is not a curfew on campus.

As there are jobs for traditional students, are any of those jobs available for PEGs?

Yes! We do have PEG students who work on campus. We do have to meet state and federal work requirements, so some PEGs are required to obtain a work permit. What is the transportation situation like? Any ways to commute between campus and nearby areas?

Students can have cars on campus, but campus is very walkable. Staunton has a trolley system to take folks around Staunton. A lot of students are also able to get rides from other students.

Is there an office of disability services on campus for help creating access plans & the like?

What kind of jobs are available for students on campus?

There are all sorts of jobs on campus, from the different offices, to opportunities with faculty and staff. After the Virtual New Student Days, there will be a posting for on-campus jobs

When do I have to pick my major?

Not until your second year. 

Does the school provide opportunities, like internships, job opportunities..etc.

Yes! We have an office called “The Vantage Point” which works with students on internship placement, job search, resume building, etc.

Are you able to cook on campus? Is there a kitchen in the dorms or if we can where do we go to cook?

Each residence hall is equipped with at least one kitchen for students to use to cook.

How many minors can you have?

Most students limit themselves to one or two.

If you are on a sports team and want a campus job are they willing to work around your academic and sports schedule?

Yes. Work-study students create their own work schedule so your supervisor will be willing to work around your other commitments.

Can PEG students also bring mini fridges and microwaves to their dorms?

Just a mini fridge. Not a microwave (unless it is a rented microfridge)

How much is it to rent the microfridge?

It’s approximately $220 to rent for the year

Does the school have “Family Days”?

Yes. We host family weekend in the fall. 

Are any activities on campus limited to traditional students only and not PEGS?

As long as events are not 21+ events, all students can attend.

How much time do students spend studying per week?

That time varies for each student, but about 2 hours for every hour of class time. Sometimes it’s less, sometimes it’s more, but with reading, writing, research, and study… two-to-one is a good number for planning purposes

What is the difference between Hunt and the Cafe?

Hunt is more of a buffet style eatery. They have 5 bars with different food options. The cafe has made to order sandwiches, soups, salads, etc.(What is the difference between hunt and cafe?)

When does the Financial Aid start to “Kick In”?

Financial aid disburses to the student’s account at the end of the add/drop period. If you have completed all of your financial aid processes, your financial aid will show up on your fall bill which will be sent out in July. What time do the majority of classes start?

Classes run all day. Classes start at 8:00 AM and run into the evening. 

What mental health resources are available?

The university has an office of Psychological Services that is available to all students. Students are offered counseling sessions and the office runs a plethora of workshops and small groups throughout the year.

If I pick a major on my application and I want to change it, is it set in stone or can I pick a new one?

It is not set in stone. Your first semester course schedule will be filled in with at major classes and gen ed courses. Students do not have to declare a major until their sophomore year.

Are there student relaxation sites and what are they like?

Students lounge in multiple places on campus. The squirrel’s nest, the Center for Student Success, and residence hall lounges are the typical spots.

Are freshmen PEGs always roomed with other freshmen?

Yes. We typically house first year PEGS with other first year PEG students.

When will we meet/see our first-year advisor?

During fall orientation

Are there any research opportunities for students interested in cellular biology? Especially in collaboration with corporations/hospitals.

We have excellent research opportunities, in fact part of majoring in biology you will have the opportunity to do your own research project your senior year. I would recommend emailing your admissions counselor to have them get you in contact with a biology faculty member.

What type of tutoring programs do you offer?

The Academic Resource Center in our Library combines the talents of writing, math, and subject tutors to get you the assistance you need in one central location with opening hours that accommodate students’ schedules.
